What Does Carer’s Allowance Refer To?
Answer: The Carer’s Allowance is a UK benefit for people who care for someone with substantial caring needs. To be eligible for Carer’s Allowance, you must be aged 16 or over and spend at least 35 hours a week providing care. The weekly rate of Carer’s Allowance is £62.10 (2017-2018 rates).
The person you care for must meet one of the following conditions: be disabled, mentally ill, or elderly; or have a terminal illness. In some cases, you may still be able to get Carer’s Allowance if the person you care for does not meet any of these conditions but requires constant supervision due to a mental incapacity. You can also get Carer’s Allowance if you are unable to look after yourself because of a physical disability, mental illness or an ongoing medical condition. There is more information about how the person you care for qualifies on the gov.uk website .
