Secure Tenancy Grounds (STG) is a set of legal principles introduced by the UK government in 1985 to ensure the security of long-term tenancies. STG applies to tenancies with a fixed-term tenancy agreement of two years or longer in England and Wales. It gives tenants the right to remain in their homes, as long as they meet the terms of the tenancy agreement, throughout the duration of the tenancy agreement. STG also allows tenants to pass on the tenancy to a spouse, civil partner or a family member upon the tenant’s death. STG is designed to protect tenants from eviction and to provide them with stability in their homes. It is also intended to encourage tenants to take responsibility for the upkeep of their homes. STG applies to all public and private landlords, regardless of their size or the type of property being rented.
