Right to Assign (RTA) is a legal right granted to tenants in the UK which allows them to transfer the remainder of their tenancy agreement to another person. This means that the tenant can assign the tenancy to a new tenant, allowing them to take over the tenancy and become the new tenant of the property. The purpose of RTA is to allow tenants to assign their tenancy to someone else if they wish to move out of the property before the end of the tenancy agreement, whether this is due to them wanting a change of location, their circumstances changing, or any other reason. The scope of RTA includes all rental agreements in the UK, as long as they are not excluded by the landlord. It also applies to both private and social sector housing.
