What Is An Assessment Of Needs?
Answer: In the UK, an Assessment of Needs (AON) is a document that outlines what support a person with disabilities or health conditions needs to live independently. It is usually prepared by local authorities after they have carried out a social care assessment.
The AON will identify the person’s areas of need and set out the services and support that should be put in place to meet those needs. The document will also state who is responsible for providing each type of support, and how much it will cost.
An Assessment of needs (AON) is the first step in planning someone’s care and support at local authority level, usually under the Care Act 2014. It sets out what help an individual may need with their daily living activities – this can be called ‘care’ or ‘support’, depending on the context it is used (e.g. health care or social care). A person will not automatically receive all of these services; there are some things that the person must be assessed as needing before they qualify for services, e.g. supervision to stop them from leaving a building unassisted if they have behavioural problems associated with dementia and other things which they will only qualify for if it is decided that they cannot achieve a certain outcome without assistance.
