Statutory Homelessness (SH) is a legal definition used in the United Kingdom to refer to people who are legally entitled to help from their local council to find housing, because they are not able to secure accommodation for themselves. The purpose of Statutory Homelessness is to ensure that those in need of housing are provided with a safe and secure place to live and to prevent homelessness from occurring. The scope of Statutory Homelessness covers those who are homeless, or threatened with homelessness, are in priority need, and have a local connection to the area they are applying for help in. Examples of those considered to be in priority need include those who are pregnant, have dependent children, or have a serious medical condition. Those considered to have a local connection include those who are already living in the area, those who have a close family member living in the area, or those who have recently moved to the area and have a job, education or training.
