The Independent Housing Ombudsman (IHO) is an independent, impartial and free service in the UK which provides an independent dispute resolution service for people who are not satisfied with their landlord or housing provider’s response to a complaint they have made. The IHO is empowered to offer redress and remedies where appropriate, as well as making recommendations to landlords and housing providers to help improve their complaints handling processes and services. The IHO has a broad scope to investigate complaints about social landlords, registered providers of social housing, private landlords, park and site owners, managing agents and housing associations. Typical complaints that IHOs cover include those about repairs and maintenance, conditions in the home, rent arrears and harassment. Additionally, IHOs can provide advice and guidance to help people resolve their issues and can also provide information about their rights and responsibilities as tenants.
